Intro and Instructions:

The inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax, was born on November 6, 1814, in Belgium. As the son of an instrument builder, Adolphe himself invented a number of instruments for band and orchestra use, including the saxophone. This instrument is a cross between the clarinet, oboe and brass instruments. It is still a popular instrument in bands, orchestras and jazz ensembles.

Make sure your friend also has a copy of this page. Race to see which of you can complete the diagram first. Spell a word for each clue below using only the letters in SAXOPHONE.

Clues:

2. a repeating shape of the moon

3. beasts of burden

4. a con job

5. part of a basketball backboard

6. a geometric form or outline

7. footwear

9. not closed

10. Now list at least more words using 4 or more of the letters in SAXOPHONE. Which of you can spell the most?

Extension Activity

Choose another musical instrument, such as a CLARINET, HARMONICA or a MANDOLIN.
See how many words of four or more letters you can spell with the letters in your instrument.
Then, using graph paper, make a diagram like the one above, with clues for some of your words.
Prepare a final copy for a friend or family member to solve.
